- ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY EXECUTIVE
- COMPENSATION SURVEY RELEASED
- ------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- Base salaries for electronics industry executives have increased an
- average of 7.3 percent in 1989, from year-earlier 1988 salaries. They fell
- slightly below the 7.5 percent average increase in 1988, over the year-earlier
- 1987 average. These facts and more are in the newly-released American
- Electronics Association's Executive Compensation Survey of the electronics
- industry.
-
- Salaries of corporate-level executives also rose an average 7.6 percent in
- 1989, compared with increases of 6.6 percent for executives in subsidiaries.
- However, the survey found that both corporate and subsidiary executives'
- salaries kept pace with salaries of CEOs.
-
- AEA's annual survey tracks compensation of executives at corporate offices
- and subsidiaries, with and without bonus plans. The 1989 survey was based on
- 1,234 AEA-member organizations, reporting compensation on 6,854 executives.
- Organizations with less than $1 million in sales were excluded from the
- analyses.

- ADOBE SHIPS MACINTOSH FORMS PROGRAM
- -----------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- Adobe Systems Inc. is now shipping TrueForm software for Macintosh
- computers.
-
- The program is a forms processing software package, designed specifically to
- automate users' existing forms. TrueForm makes the transition from paper to
- computerized forms without requiring the customer to change the forms they are
- familiar with.
-
- With TrueForm, users can import their electronic forms from popular drawing
- programs such as Adobe Illustrator 88 and MacDraw, and from popular page-
- layout programs such as Aldus PageMaker. TrueForm accepts Encapsulated
- PostScript, PICT and MacPaint files.
-
- In addition, unlike other forms programs, TrueForm allows users to take
- advantage of their existing paper forms, by directly scanning them in and
- immediately filling them out. TrueForm reads prescanned forms saved in TIFF
- format and supports scanners using the Apple standard scanner interface.
-
- TrueForm is compatible with Macintosh Plus, SE, SE/30, II, IIx, and IIcx
- computers. The program is now available from all authorized Adobe dealers and
- VARs.
-
- The package contains two programs. The first, TrueForm Set-Up, allows the
- forms administrator to automate forms. The second, TrueForm Fill-Out,
- provides completion, printing and data sharing of previously automated forms.
- The complete package, including both programs, 10 sample forms and the 4th
- DIMENSION printing module, has a suggested retail price of $395. In addition,
- customers can purchase a 4-pack of the Fill-Out program for $295.

- PC/COMPUTING PRINTS EXCLUSIVE
- STORY: "HOW I CRACKED KGB SPY RING"
- -----------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- In the September issue of PC/Computing, astronomer Clifford Stoll
- reveals how he tracked a mysterious computer hacker bent on espionage.
-
- His exclusive firsthand account is excerpted from the upcoming book, "The
- Cuckoo's Egg," to be published by Doubleday.
-
- A 75-cent accounting error led Stoll to accidentally discover a hacker
- strolling unseen through the defense department's computer networks, in search
- of top secrets about Star Wars, missile defenses, and the CIA. Neither the
- FBI nor the CIA were initially interested in investigating the loss of 75
- cents in computer time, so Stoll spent the better part of a year tracking his
- elusive prey.
-
- According to news accounts, Stoll's efforts led last week to the indictment
- of three West German men "on suspicion of espionage activities for the Soviet
- intelligence agency KGB."
-
- The West German government identified the men indicted only by their first
- names and last initials, in a four-page statement issued by the chief federal
- prosecutor last week. The defendants were Peter C. and Markus H., of
- Hannover, and Dirk B., of West Berlin.
-
- However, the full identities of the men are revealed in the second excerpt
- from Stoll's book, which will appear in the October issue of PC/Computing.
-
- A fourth man avoided prosecution for espionage by cooperating with police.
- According to Stoll, he "was last seen alive on May 23, 1989. In an isolated
- forest outside of Hannover, police found his charred bones next to a melted
- can of gasoline. A borrowed car was parked nearby, keys still in the
- ignition. No suicide note was found."

- itself, such as quick tips on system navigation, the online GEnie User Manual,
- the GEnie Phone Access List, How to Use GEnie Client Services, copyright
- notices, GEnie policies and guidelines, hours of operation, holiday schedules
- and rates.
-
- While there will be informal Real-Time Conferences (RTCs) in GEnieus almost

- Services, Marketing, Billing, and even Programming.
-
- From time to time, informal classes on how to do things on the GEnie service,
- such as downloading public domain software, will be held in the RTC.

- ------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- Transend Corporation has just made available a new LAN-based E-mail

- pop-up File Directory is available for choosing one or more files to send
- along with a message.

- CompletE-MAIL is immediately available directly from Transend at an
- introductory price of $150 per five-user pack. After the first 500 orders, it
